Spell Set

revision 9 · exported 2026-11-02 · open the doc

(Idea) A basic set of 22 battle spells and 3 overworld spells, covering attack, defence, healing, assist and control. It keeps the four prototype spells as they are and follows the Story Bible: each faction owns one drawing style, and Evane names are one plain word while Facet names start with a gem-cutting term. Numbers are first guesses, sized against the Training Golem (120 HP, 12 damage every 6 s).

In the prototype: Brace, Mend, Bevel Lash and Prism Snare are now spell data files, since the battle code already handles their effects. They are in the main tab's Spell Book. Prism Snare's "can't attack for 6 s" is a 6 s stagger, and Bevel Lash's shield-piercing does nothing yet, because no enemy has a shield.

At a glance Open page

The Facets get one spell in every role, since each of their spells is hard to draw. The Evane cover every role between their five factions, so an Evane player has to learn from more than one faction to get a full kit.

In the tables below, a mirrored spell's shape is the right thumb's stroke and the left thumb draws its mirror image. On a parallel spell both thumbs draw the same stroke. Facet spells give each thumb's stroke. "Outward" means toward that thumb's screen edge, as in the Spell Book.

Attack Open page

Five ways to hurt: a quick hit (Gale), a heavy hit (Coil), several small hits (Squall), damage over time (Wither) and a delayed blow (Toll). Tally rewards taking hits, and Bevel Lash breaks shields. Coil and Gale are unchanged from the prototype.

Defence Open page

Three answers to an incoming hit: absorb some of it (Brace), absorb more of it (Facet Seal), or dodge it (Drift). Facet Seal is unchanged from the prototype.

BraceWardens, mirroredA bracket: outward, sharp corner, down, sharp corner, back inward30 mm, 600 msShield 15Act 1, taught by Aske hand over hand (she traces it with you, but doesn't cast)

Facet SealFacets, asymmetricLeft: a circle, counter-clockwise from the top. Right: a square, clockwise from the top-left corner28 mm, 800 msShield 22Act 2, split glyph: circle given in Lanternfall, square found in the Shardfield

Drift has the shortest breath in the set on purpose: a dodge is cast in reaction, so it has to be quick.

Healing Open page

A quick heal (Mend), healing over time (Root), a cleanse (Calm) and the strongest heal, which is Facet (Table Mend). That matches the lore: the Tenders heal only what nature would heal, while the Facets put no limit on it.

Assist Open page

Assist spells make the next casts better rather than doing anything themselves. Hasten is the one that matters most for mastery: a longer breath window leaves room for longer composites.

SpellFaction, styleShapeSize, breathEffectLearned
TailwindWaymakers, parallelBoth thumbs: a check mark, a short stroke down and to the right, then a long one up and to the right28 mm, 600 msYour next 2 casts get +25% powerAct 2, Waymaker side quest

Crown SurgeFacets, asymmetricLeft: a W, down and up twice, moving outward. Right: a circle, clockwise from the top28 mm, 850 msCosts you 15 HP; your next cast gets +60% powerAct 3, warp-born glyph

Crown Surge is the Facet way in miniature: more power than any Evane assist, paid for by the caster.

Control Open page

Control spells work on the enemy's clock: knock it back (Repel), slow it (Linger), silence its special attacks (Hush), or stop it outright (Prism Snare). Repel is unchanged from the prototype.

SpellFaction, styleShapeSize, breathEffectLearned
RepelWardens, mirroredAn L: straight down, hard corner, then outward32 mm, 600 ms10 damage; enemy staggered 2.5 sStarts learned (the door-mark)

Overworld Open page

Three spells cast outside battle, to open the world rather than fight in it.

Composites Open page

Any two learned spells can be threaded into one stroke; their effects apply in order. Pairs that work well together:

  • Hush into Toll: the enemy is silenced while the delayed blow lands.
  • Linger into Wither: a slower enemy takes more of the damage over time between its attacks.
  • Mend into Echo: heal 20, then heal 10 more.
  • Tailwind into Bevel Lash: the biggest single hit in the set.
  • Brace into Coil: a mirrored defence into a mirrored attack, the easiest thread to learn on.

What the code would need Open page

Today a spell's data has damage, shield and staggerSeconds. This set adds:

  • Healing: instant heal, heal over time, cleanse.
  • Damage: multiple hits, damage over time, delayed damage, damage that ignores shields, damage scaled by recent damage taken.
  • Enemy effects: silence, slowed attacks, no attacks for a time.
  • Player effects: dodge the next attack, breath bonus, power bonus on the next casts, HP cost, recast the previous spell.
  • Overworld casting, outside battle.

Open questions Open page

  • Should Facet spells hit harder than Evane spells because they are harder to draw, or be equal but different?
  • Is 22 battle spells the right size for a basic set, or should each faction start smaller?
  • Player HP isn't defined yet; heal amounts depend on it.
  • Several shapes may be confused by the recognizer and need a check on device: the Keepers' loops (Toll, Hasten, Linger), the Still Choir's short strokes (Hush, Calm, Listen), and Gale against Squall.
  • Which of these should become spell data files in the prototype first?
