The Evane spell
Repel
Mirrored · 10 damage, staggers 2.5 s
Tutorial spell. Each thumb draws an L, mirrored: straight down, a hard corner, then outward. Pushes the enemy back and delays its next attack.
Strokes
Mirrored: the left thumb draws the right thumb's shape flipped left to right.
| Thumb | Size | Sharp corners | Vertices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Left thumb | 32 mm (19 × 32 mm) | 63% along, 90° | 3 |
| Right thumb | 32 mm (19 × 32 mm) | 63% along, 90° | 3 |
Size is the longer side of the drawn shape. Corner positions are the share of the stroke's length drawn before reaching them.

- Breath window
- 600 ms (default)
- Fizzles
- below 45% overall, or under 30% shape on either thumb

Effect

Against monsters
| Monster | HP | Casts at best | Casts at worst |
|---|---|---|---|
| Training Golem | 120 | 8 | 20 |
| Sallow Glint | 14 | 1 | 3 |
Casts needed with this spell alone, at a perfect cast (1.5x) and at one just over the fizzle line (0.6x).

Elsewhere in the Codex
A tutorial prompt shows mirrored L shapes; the character "accidentally" draws them and casts a repel spell, kicking off the story.
The casting prototype ships eight spells, five Evane and three Facet. Repel, Coil, Gale and Facet Seal came first, one per drawing style; Brace, Mend, Bevel Lash and Prism Snare are the first batch from the Spell Set tab. Each lives in its own data file (
Assets/StreamingAssets/Data/Spells/<id>.json), and the scorer checks exactly what this table describes. Shapes are written as the player sees them on a landscape phone; "outward" means toward that thumb's screen edge. From Mobile RPG Codex › Spellcasting › Spell Book (Prototype)
Stroke direction is part of the spell: an L drawn from the bottom up, or a Repel drawn with both thumbs as the same (unmirrored) L, does not cast. Size is the longer side of the drawn shape; drawing 1.5x too big or too small costs about half the size score. Every spell must be learned before it can be cast; a well-drawn unlearned spell fizzles with "You have not learned …".

Top row, left to right: Repel, Coil, Gale, Facet Seal. Second row: Brace, Mend, Bevel Lash, Prism Snare. In each pair the left half is the left thumb and the right half the right thumb; the white dot is where the stroke starts. The image is rendered from the spell data files, the same way the in-game spell book draws its icons.
A new player knows only Repel (marked
startsLearnedin its data file); every other spell is learned by tracing it. Tapping an unlearned spell in the spell book pauses the battle and shows each thumb's shape at its intended size, with a dot where the stroke starts. Three traces that are recognized as that spell and score at least 55% teach it, and it is saved on the device. Breath is not timed while learning, so a student can draw slowly. A drawing that best matches a spell you have not learned fizzles with "You have not learned …"; it never falls back to a weaker spell you do know. The trace count (learnTraces) is per spell, and the 55% bar is tunable on the device. Later, glyph fragments found in the world will unlock what can be studied. From Mobile RPG Codex › Spellcasting › Learning Spells (Prototype)

Repel can never be sealed: the door-mark is older than the Wardens, so no player is ever left without a spell.
Section 5 has the beat: the village is attacked, a prompt shows mirrored Ls, the character "accidentally" draws them and casts Repel. (Idea) How that works in-world:
From Story Bible › Protagonist and Mentor › The first cast: Repel
Every door in Velan carries the door-mark: two Ls painted mirrored on the doorposts, an old protective charm. It is the Repel glyph. Almost nobody can actually cast it.
From Story Bible › Protagonist and Mentor › The first cast: Repel
As a child the protagonist traced their family's door-marks with both hands every night, a habit their father taught them. Those years of tracing are why Repel starts learned (as it does in the game data).
