Three answers to an incoming hit: absorb some of it (Brace), absorb more of it (Facet Seal), or dodge it (Drift). Facet Seal is unchanged from the prototype.
From Spell Set › Defence
Drift has the shortest breath in the set on purpose: a dodge is cast in reaction, so it has to be quick.
From Spell Set › Defence
What happens: the companion talk of the act happens here. [Twinhold first] Tamsin admits the un-teaching bothered them and that they'll never say so in Twinhold. [Lanternfall first] Rook teaches the hands a Facet card game in which every hand you win you must give away. Ness offers to teach Drift, the Waymaker dodge, for help with a side errand. Dace mentions that the other four factions call Waymaker casting barely Evane, and that Dace "carries Facets for the same price, so they're not wrong".
From Walkthrough: Act 2 › Chapter 2: The Long Road › Night camp
Player does: talk; optionally learn Drift (Ness's errand: find three lost ribbons along the ridge, a short field search).

forsworn_menderandhollow_cut, 160 HP each here (the mender casts Repel and a binding; the cut casts Bevel Lash and throws every third spell back)- Counters
- Repel interrupts their casts; Drift dodges Bevel Lash, which ignores shields (Spell Roadmap)
- Difficulty
- Normal
How much optional magic ships in Act 2? The Spell Set tab puts twelve optional spells here. Recommend: main line plus Tally, Drift, Table Mend, Root and Hush first; the rest later. VEL-60 decides.
- Encounter
sallow_glyph_hunters- Enemy (id)
- glyph-hunter (
glyph_hunter) ×3 (Sabe's cut)- HP
- 140 each
- Attack
- Bevel Lash every 5 s for 15, ignoring shields; flees at 30% unless staggered

- Difficulty
- Medium
- Encounter
hour_trial- Enemy (id)
- hour sentinel (
hour_sentinel)- HP
- 500
- Attack
- Toll: 30 damage landing 3 s after its bell swings, every 10 s; at half health the Hundred-Year Hour stops the clock for 4 s and it strikes twice; mirrored spells do half
- Counters
- Linger (halves the pace of its blows), Brace timed to the landing, Hasten for long threads in the gaps; Drift dodges a Toll and Hush silences the bell (each if learned in Act 2)
- Difficulty
- Hard but slow; the fight lasts one "hour" (about 3 minutes)
Against it (Ondine and Stop-both paths): Iver fights with the Culet cut behind him. Every 5 s a cut pushes the gauge 12 towards Shattered and opens a crack under the player, which deals damage every second until a mirrored cast at 70% or better seals it, or a parallel cast pushes it off the Pane. Iver's own spells are Facet: Bevel Lash ignores shields, so Brace and Facet Seal don't stop it, but Drift dodges it. Every third attack he draws Crown Surge, paying in his own blood, and his next cut lands for 40: Hush silences him through it, or Prism Snare stops it. At half HP he pulls his sleeves back and the player sees his sealed palms in close-up (a short cut-in), and his casting speeds up.
From Walkthrough: Act 4 › Chapter E: The Finale on the Pane › Phase two: the asymmetric shattering

iver_kest(700 HP)- Where

- Cut every 5 s: gauge 12 towards Shattered and a crack (3 damage a second until cleared). Bevel Lash 18 (ignores shields) every 6 s. Crown Surge every third attack, then a 40-damage cut. Faster at half HP.
- Counter
- Mirrored casts seal cracks, parallel casts clear them; Drift for Bevel Lash; Hush or Prism Snare for the surge.
- Difficulty
- Hardest
