The Velan Codex

Spell

The First Pair

Named composite (cross-side thread), learned from a reflected glyph

Idea, not yet confirmed

Described in the Codex; there is no Data/Spells file for it yet, so no strokes to draw.

Parts and shape

Brace into Facet Seal: the Warden bracket flowing straight into the Facet circle and square, without lifting either thumb

Effect

Shield 40; the enemy's next attack within 4 s is reflected back at it. On the Pane: gauge 25 towards 0.

Notes

Brace (Act 1, optional) and Facet Seal (Act 2) must both be learned. Two shields, one of each side, holding together, as the Pane is held. Breath: 85% of the two windows (1,190 ms), as for any composite. Flag composite.known.first_pair. It replaces the spell roadmap's Stillhold (stillhold, Facet Seal into Linger) as the thread that holds the Pane.

Elsewhere in the Codex

The First Pair. Two lake-folk, one on each shore, drew the first glyph between them across the water. The Evane say they were twins; the Facets say they were strangers.

Scenes
4.11–4.13
Where
Aske's fire; the Pane at dawn
What it does
The companions speak. The First Pair glyph shows in the Pane. The choice.

From Walkthrough: Act 4 › The act at a glance

What the player casts
A cross-side thread (one Evane part, one Facet part, either order)
How the reflection answers
Both answers at once.
In battle
Normal composite power, and the gauge moves 10 towards 0. The First Pair moves it 25 towards 0.

From Walkthrough: Act 4 › Chapter E: The Finale on the Pane › The Pane rule

Player does: cast threads (five good cross-side threads with the gauge in the middle band, −30 to +30). Misses cost nothing but time, as with <<prompt_cast>>. The First Pair counts double. Without it, any cross-side thread works, including Thaw (thaw, Repel into Pavilion Wake) from Act 3.

From Walkthrough: Act 4 › Chapter E: The Finale on the Pane › The hold (Stop-both path only)

Card
The Pane
Mended
Still to its depths. The warps close one by one over the seasons, and the glints thin out until children stop believing in them. No asymmetric glyph surfaces anywhere again.
Shattered
Gone. Its pieces stand in a ring where it was, each reflecting its own sky, like the rest of the Shardfield. New warps open across Velan every week, and glyphs of every kind surface at all of them.
Held
Cracked from rim to rim and standing. The warps stay as they were: no fewer, no more. The First Pair glyph shows in the Pane at dawn, and people come from both sides to look at it.

From Walkthrough: Act 4 › Chapter F: Epilogues › Epilogue cards

[ ] The First Pair. A new named composite, Brace into Facet Seal, learned from a reflected glyph that shows the Still Age drew both kinds together. Recommendation: keep it. It makes the Stop-both path something the player discovers rather than something they're offered, and it puts the theme (no side is right) into the oldest glyph in the world. The fallback (any cross-side thread) means no player is locked out of the path. Settled: the First Pair replaces the spell roadmap's Stillhold (Facet Seal into Linger), and keeps #FFFFFF on purpose instead of the cross-side #FFE08A (VEL-63).

From Walkthrough: Act 4 › Open questions for Ray

[ ] 38. The First Pair. Settled for now by VEL-63, confirm. Keep a new named thread, Brace into Facet Seal, from a reflected glyph in the Pane at dawn? Recommendation: keep it. It replaces the roadmap's Stillhold, keeps #FFFFFF on purpose instead of the cross-side #FFE08A, and any cross-side thread is the fallback, so no player is locked out of Stop both. Its overlap with Thornshield (0.55) needs a recognizer check. Sources: walkthrough-act-4.md § 16 Q8; spell-roadmap.md Composites: named threads.

Threads. Headwind (Repel into Gale) is the first, taught by Rook or Dace in Act 2; Tempest (Gale into Coil) and Bulwark (Repel into Facet Seal) follow the lesson; Thornshield (Coil into Facet Seal) and Wellspring (Mend into Root) are Act 2's other named threads. Thaw (Repel into Pavilion Wake, 1,360 ms) undoes the stilling of Corran in Act 3; the scene is still called the Unstilling, and Aske casts Brace across the warp at the same moment. The First Pair (Brace into Facet Seal, #FFFFFF) is Act 4's reflected thread and replaces the roadmap's Stillhold. Knell stays on hold.
