Only a Warden court can do it, and only after a crime: casting a forbidden spell on Evane people or inside an Evane town, and getting caught. Casting Facet spells in the wild never risks it.

From Story Bible › The Two Sides

Aske saw it. That night, in Aske's barn, the protagonist fights an old Warden training golem. This is the prototype's existing battle.

From Story Bible › Protagonist and Mentor › The first cast: Repel

Name and look: Aske Tarran, a woman of about sixty, ferry keeper at Sallowbank for twenty years. Broad, rope-scarred hands. She still wears her Warden glyph bands, turned inside out so the marks face her skin.

From Story Bible › Protagonist and Mentor › The Mentor

Past: born in Twinhold to a Warden family; a mender by twenty-five, one of the Evane casters who seal warps and enforce the rules; later a company captain under Ondine Ash. Twenty years ago at Corran, a Facet town beside a widening warp, Ondine ordered a five-person mirrored seal. Aske argued against it, then cast her part. The seal held the warp and froze the town with it: Corran's people still stand in clear glass, mid-step. She blames Ondine, and herself more.

From Story Bible › Protagonist and Mentor › The Mentor

Since then: Aske still knows every Warden glyph and has not cast one in twenty years. She keeps the Sallow ferry because it is the nearest crossing to Corran, and carries anyone for free, Evane or Facet. It is the only rule she still keeps.

From Story Bible › Protagonist and Mentor › The Mentor

(Idea) The send-off (section 5's Hobbit-style beat): Aske gives two letters, one to a Warden in Twinhold and one to a Facet in Lanternfall. The Twinhold letter has a pale blue seal, the Lanternfall one amber; the names on the front are not decided yet. "Deliver both. Believe neither until you've met both."

From Story Bible › Protagonist and Mentor › The Mentor

The same pattern, small: the Sallow warp began as a crack widened by Facet glyph-hunters, then torn open by a Warden mending.

From Story Bible › Story Outline › Act 3: Corran

(Idea) Recurring enemies: glints (loose reflections leaking from warps, the common monster); Warden training golems; Sallow Wyrm; glass storms in the Shardfield; outlaw casters of both sides in the Undermere.

From Story Bible › Key Cast

[ ] Who are Aske's two letters addressed to? The seals are set (pale blue for the Twinhold Warden, amber for Lanternfall); the names are not.

From Story Bible › Open Story Questions › Still open

What happens: Morning; the river has dropped a hand's width. Aske has packed for the protagonist. Someone will come asking after them, two someones likely, and each will blame the other for the river. She sets down two letters, one with a pale blue seal for a Warden in Twinhold and one with an amber seal for Lanternfall: "Deliver both. Believe neither until you've met both." She will walk with the protagonist as far as the Drowned Steps.

Who: the Gate Pair (Sef, a Warden, and Wren, a Facet), then Reeve Hollin Tace.

From Walkthrough: Prologue and Act 1 › Act 1: The Sallow Road › Chapter 3: Halfway

What happens: Bram gives the protagonist the last room ("The town's full of people looking for someone."). In the morning the Truce Stone has a crowd: a Warden in silver and pale blue is asking stall-keepers about whoever rang the Glass three nights ago, and a one-armed Facet on a crate is asking the same thing louder. Neither knows yet who they're looking for.
